On September 28th, we participated in, and we were one of the sponsors of the Baixcicletada 2024, a key event within European Mobility Week. The Baixcicletada not only celebrates the use of bicycles but also emphasizes the importance of having safe cycling networks that connect the different municipalities of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.
Origin and Objective of the Baixcicletada
Since its first edition in 2003, the Baixcicletada has brought together residents of Barcelona and the surrounding metropolitan municipalities yearly. The goal is clear: to raise awareness of bicycles as a daily mode of transportation and advocate for the need for safe infrastructure that allows people to cycle efficiently and securely between different municipalities.
The Importance of Metropolitan Connections
Urban and metropolitan mobility ensures citizens’ quality of life, economic development, and social cohesion. This is why cities within metropolitan areas must be connected to the metropolis through sustainable and accessible to all transportation alternatives, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status.
As these areas grow and urban populations expand, ensuring that people can move around sustainably and safely becomes a top priority. In this context, bicycles and public transportation emerge as efficient and eco-friendly solutions.
Moreover, transportation and mobility are central to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, Goal 11.2 calls for all people to have access to safe, accessible, and sustainable transportation systems by 2030, with particular attention to the needs of vulnerable groups of people.
ZICLA, Committed to Sustainable Mobility
We firmly believe in the role of metropolitan cycling networks and public transport systems in transforming our cities into safer and more affordable, accessible and, sustainable places. For this reason, we will continue to support initiatives like the Baixcicletada, which promotes a shift towards safer and more accessible, and inclusive mobility for everyone.
Target 11.2: By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women,
