Winter is on our doorstep and cities are preparing themselves for the challenges ahead in the cold season of the year. As cities look to redesign their streets to provide more safe mobility and transportation options, new maintenance and operations challenges and opportunities arise.
How can cities keep their protected bike lanes operational during winter? US DOT Volpe Center and NACTO are providing a great guide with case studies of several cities across the US. The featured cities have begun to deploy small vehicles to clear snow and debris from their protected bike lane networks.
Where they are used, cities have found that the smaller vehicles are effective for cleaning and plowing protected bike lanes, as well as sidewalks and multiuse paths.
