On July 14, 2014, Mexico City passed a new law aimed at improving quality of life and expanding urban mobility through sustainable transport. For the first time, the city explicitly guarantees the right to mobility, specifying that “mobility is the right of each individual and of the society to move freely and access goods through the different modes recognized in this law.” The law also created a new mobility hierarchy, placing pedestrians and cyclists above motorists and prioritizing active transport.

Barcelona.

Barcelona has always been a model for all European cities in terms of urban adaptation for disabled people. Back in 1977, a group of disabled people stopped the traffic of one of the main avenues in Barcelona where some renovation works were being undertaken. They were protesting against the construction of the crosswalks with curbs, which would not allow them to use the crossings. Police eventually dissolved the manifestation, but that symbolic act of protest made the supervisor of the works change his mind and make the crosswalks with ramps. This wasn’t the last protest to improve accessibility for disabled people, but it set a precedent in the defense or their rights to have a more friendly city. In 1981, Eugeni Pérez was the first neighbour of the city that inaugurated the first acoustic traffic light. In the last decades, the city council and TMB (transport service company) have renovated the majority of the metro stations to make them accessible to all citizens, and installed bus platforms like the Vectorial® System all across the city. Furthermore, Barcelona has been pioneer last year by launching a new mobility plan to reduce traffic by 21% to move away from car hegemony. The plan is based around the idea of “superilles” (superblocks): mini neighbourhoods around which traffic flows, and in which space is repurposed for the use of pedestrians.

Mumbai and New Delhi.
