30 Nov, 2017 | City | 0 comments

At ZICLA we have been working since our beginnings to turn cities into safer and more welcoming places for people. Because of the continual acceleration of the population growth, studies reveal that by 2050, 70% of the population will live in cities. And the human population gets more dense, companies like Zicla, regional governments and social actors work together to adapt the cities to the new needs of the inhabitants. The Smart Cities of the world feature an excellent 24 hours public transport, and here is a list of the best ones:

Cities with 24 hours public transport.

New York.

New York is famous for being the city that never sleeps, and has a 24 hours working public transit system. The metro system of the city works since 1904, and has had an operating system of 24h a day since its beginnings. Their system of maintenance can work because most of the lines have four tracks (two are used for local stopping and the other for express services that don’t stop in all the stops) and trains can be switched between tracks to undertake maintenance works.

Melbourne.

Melbourne in Australia has the largest tram network of the world. It has the second highest ratio of public transport usage among Australian capital cities due to its complete transport system integrating train, tram and bus services that all combined, offer a 24 hours public transport service to its citizens.

Copenhagen.

Copenhagen metro has a driver-less metro system that operates 24h a day. Getting around Copenhagen is easy, fast and convenient thanks to its efficient, safe and practical public transport. The metro system is relatively new as the principle of building a rail transit was passed in 1992. The construction of the first two lines started in 1996 and by the 1st of January 2000, the S-train service from Solbjerg to Vanløse was terminated. During rush hour (from 07:00 to 10:00 and 15:00 to 18:00) is a 2mn headway between trains.

Chicago.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is the second largest public transport system of the U.S.A. (right behind New York’s metropolitan transportation authority. It operates 24h a day thanks to its combined system of bu, rail and tourist trolley services. Furthermore, Chicago is one of the few cities in the USA that provide a rapid transit service to two major airports (o’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport).

Tokyo.

Some years ago there was a typical caricature of the busy salaryman sleeping on a bench in downtown Tokyo because he missed his last train home, but since 2014 doesn’t exist anymore. Citiy authorities decide to launch a night bus service to connect the city centre with the districts of Shibuya and Roppongi, a necessary measure in one of the world’s most busiest cities.
