Accessibility at intercity bus stops: the case of Can Ruti in Badalona.

PROJECT NAME: Works for the improvement of the road of Can Ruti
CITY: Badalona, Spain
LOCATION: Can Ruti Road
OPENING DATE: May 2019

The health and care complex in the area of Can Ruti is one of the nerve centres of the city of Badalona, where a lot of activity is concentrated. Due to its location, outside the town of Badalona and in a mountainous area, this was an area with certain accessibility difficulties that required a draught intervention to reverse this situation.

Need and project objectives.

The Can Ruti road, which connects the city of Badalona with the Guttmann Institute and the health and care complex Can Ruti, was in poor condition, lacked sidewalks, and had no accessible bus stops. In 2019, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) tendered the improvement works. The objective of the project was the improvement of the condition of the road of Can Ruti and the adaptation of the bus stops that exist in the same one to guarantee in them the accessibility of all the people and in particular those with reduced mobility.

The proposed solution.

ZICLA Vectorial system Accessibility at intercity bus stops: the case of Can Ruti in Badalona. 1The solution adopted sought to minimize costs and maximize the operating area. This was one of the reasons to rule out in the project the creation of permanent concrete platforms at bus stops because of their high cost and the time needed to build them, so flexible, easy and quick to install, and economical alternative solutions were sought. The AMB finally opted for the platforms of the ZICLA  Vectorial® system for its versatility, simplicity of installation, and its competitive price against definitive solutions such as civil works concrete platforms.

The project included the installation of two platforms of the Vectorial® system in an island configuration, with ramp access to the road at the end, of the following dimensions:

  • Platform 1: 2.04 x 12.1 meters.
  • latform 2: 1.66 x 14.7 meters.
