Zebra® bike lane separators on the Better Barrier Pilot project at New York City.

PROJECT NAME:NYC Better Barrier Pilot project.
CITY:Manhattan, New York.
LOCATION:Union Square between 15th and 16th Street.
OPENING DATE:June 2022.

According to State Senator Brad Hoylman “New York must build infrastructure that supports environmentally sustainable choices and installing greater protection of bike lanes is a necessary step forward.”

Protecting our bicyclists will encourage more New Yorkers to rely on this healthier mode of transportation – healthier for them and for the environment,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.

Need and project objectives.

At the beginning of June 2022 NYC DOT launched Better Barrier Pilot project as part of the administration’s ongoing commitment to harden half of the city’s existing delineators-protected bike lanes in two years, using sturdier materials that can keep lanes clear for cyclists.

Over the course, the DOT will test new hardened rubber, plastic, and concrete barrier types along four bike lanes across the city. If effective, these barriers would greatly expand protections for cyclists with materials that are easier to install on a broader set of streets.

The proposed solution.

union square

At the beginning of June 2022, as part of the Better Barriers Pilot project, the NYC DOT protected 206 ft of the bike lane at Union sq between 15th and 16th Street. To do so they installed 40 Zebra® 13 | Zero cycle lane units with 5ft separation between centers. The Zebra® 13 | Zero is the highest separator of the Zebra Family®. Due to its height (5 in), its high visibility (thanks to its retroreflective bands) and accentuated by an oblique positioning on the road, it is a deterrent for vehicles. Resistant to shock, it is made of 100% recycled post-consumer plastics so it is a product that improves mobility and safety in cities with a minimum environmental impact.
