Improving accessibility to the public transport network.

Location:Arbon, CH.
Project name:Improving accessibility to the public transport network.
Date:May 2025.

The city of Arbon (Switzerland) has carried out a project to upgrade its public transport infrastructure, which includes the launch of an autonomous bus service and the installation of nine Vectorial® bus platforms to improve accessibility at bus stops. For this latest improvement, the city decided to install Vectorial® system platforms at 9 bus stops, and did it so with the help of Burri, our exclusive distributor in Switzerland.

This project is part of an effort by the city to improve the experience of public transport users.

Project objectives.

One of the project’s objectives was to improve accessibility to public transport throughout the city of Arbon, ensuring that all users, regardless of age or mobility, could access buses comfortably and safely, especially given that these bus platforms are located at strategic points throughout the city.

At the same time, the challenge was to find a solution that would blend harmoniously into the urban environment and landscape, respecting the city’s character as much as possible and minimizing the visual impact that an intervention of this nature could generate.

Proposed solution and implementation.

To achieve these objectives, nine Vectorial® bus platforms were strategically installed at autonomous bus stops throughout the city, including the historic district, the marina stop, and the train station. Each bus platform was implemented with an island configuration, providing a safe space for waiting for the bus.

In some locations where platforms were installed, the sidewalks were too low, so the platforms were installed directly on the sidewalk rather than on the road to facilitate access to the bus, especially for people with functional diversity.

To ensure barrier-free access to the bus, all platforms were equipped with ramps connecting to both the road and the sidewalk, depending on the requirements of each of the nine locations.

In this regard, the choice of the Vectorial® system was essential, as it perfectly met the project’s needs, integrating accessibility and functionality into a single solution and significantly improving the safety and comfort of bus users.
