PROJECT NAME: | Dr. Fleming Street bike lane |
TOWN/CITY: | Barcelona – Spain |
LOCATION: | Dr. Fleming Street |
OPENING DATE: | September 2017 |
Barcelona continues adapting its urban space to distribute it more equitably among the different modes of transport, opening up circulation spaces for bicycles, improving the bus network and giving priority to people travelling on foot by expanding sidewalks and bringing in traffic calming to offer comfort and safety. The extension of the network of cycle paths is one of the City Council’s key measures to achieve this adaptation. The goal is to increase the kilometres of bike lanes substantially so that 95% of the population of the city has at least one bike lane less than 300 meters away from home.
Need and project objectives.
The bicycle plan 2017-2018 of Barcelona City Council includes, apart from the growth of the cycling infrastructure the improvement of the existing one. A clear example of this is the bike lane in Doctor Fleming Street. Previously, this bike lane was located on the sidewalk; now with the remodelling, the bike lane has been moved to the roadway, returning the sidewalk to the pedestrians.
The proposed solution.
This bike lane is bidirectional and it goes over the whole Doctor Fleming Street, from Diagonal Avenue till General Mitre. In order to segregate the dedicated lane, the City Council of Barcelona has opted once again for the Zipper® system.
