LOCATION: | Hollywood Blvd, between Gower St and Lyman Pl |
PROJECT NAME: | Hollywood Boulevard Safety and Mobility Project |
CITY: | Los Angeles, California |
DATE: | September 2024 |
As part of the Access to Hollywood plan, the Hollywood Boulevard Safety and Mobility Project aims to transform one of Los Angeles’ most iconic streets into a safer and more accessible space for residents and visitors. The section between Gower St and the intersection of Sunset Blvd and Fountain Ave, lies on the city’s High-Injury Network (HIN)—a system of streets that represents only 6% of LA’s roadways but accounts for 70% of severe injuries and deaths involving pedestrians.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) initiated this project in August to tackle these challenges, reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities while enhancing mobility options for all users.
Project Objectives
The reconfiguration of Hollywood Boulevard focuses on:
- Slowing excessive vehicle speeds.
- Reducing pedestrian exposure to traffic.
- Facilitating safer vehicle turns.
- Allocating dedicated space for bikes and scooters.
Additionally, the project seeks to connect with the Hollywood Walk of Fame project, creating a unified corridor that links Hollywood to Los Feliz under the Access to Hollywood initiative.
Proposed Solutions and Implementation
The redesigned street layout includes:
- 2.1 miles (3.4 kilometers) of parking-protected bike lanes between Lyman Pl and Van Ness Ave.
- Conversion of on-street parking into protected bike lanes between Van Ness Ave and Gower St.
- Redesign of the street layout to improve safety and decrease speeding.
- Freshly painted crosswalks, curbs, and street markings to enhance visibility and safety.
To ensure the cycle lane’s safety, the LADOT employed the Zipper® system traffic lane divider. This modular system creates a physical barrier that effectively separates parked vehicles from bike lanes, mitigating risks of intrusion and enhancing safety for cyclists.
The chosen configuration for this project is the B2AB setup, which features:
- One Double A module (center module).
- Two B modules (end modules) at each segment.
This innovative design provides flexibility, adapting to roadway and traffic conditions while ensuring maximum protection for all users. By using the Zipper® system, Hollywood Boulevard is set to become a safer, more welcoming thoroughfare, aligning with Vision Zero objectives of reducing injuries and Los Angeles City’s goal of promoting sustainable transportation.
Other Projects in Los Angeles Featuring the Zipper® system traffic lane dividers.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has placed its trust in the Zipper® system traffic lane dividers for various projects across the city. These durable and modular dividers can already be found on prominent streets like Main Street and Figueroa Street, two of the city’s key urban arteries. These installations demonstrate LADOT’s commitment to enhancing traffic safety and improving the urban mobility experience in bustling areas of Los Angeles.
Looking ahead, LADOT is exploring additional applications of ZICLA’s street safety solutions to further support sustainable and safe transportation in the city. For instance, the department is currently testing our Zebra® cycle lane separators. Moreover, plans are underway to implement the Vectorial® system to protect intersections, ensuring that both pedestrians, cyclists and motorized traffic navigate these critical areas more safely and comfortably.
