Customized bus platforms at the new bus stops of the NEXTransit Downtown Plan.

LOCATION:Pittsburgh, PA, US.
PROJECT NAME:NEXTransit Downtown Plan.
DATE:2025.

Project objectives.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit promoted this project as part of the NEXTransit Downtown Plan, which recommended the creation of new routes for downtown Pittsburgh bus services with the goal of modernizing and reorganizing the city’s public transportation system and reducing the delays that used to occur on routes passing through downtown.

To achieve these objectives, it was necessary to ensure that the new bus stops guaranteed universal accessibility, offering all users safe and comfortable access to public transportation. The project also aimed to provide dedicated waiting areas to reduce sidewalk congestion and improve pedestrian flow. In addition, it sought to maintain visual consistency with other bus stops throughout the city, respecting a coherent urban design and reinforcing the visual identity of the public transportation system.

Proposed solutions and implementation.

To carry out this project, five Vectorial® bus platforms were installed at different points throughout the city, all configured as sidewalk extensions and leveled with the curb, allowing direct and safe access to the bus. Additionally, Pointer® Flex vertical traffic delineators were installed on the platforms to indicate their beginning and end, and to maximize their visibility from a distance.

The design and characteristics of the Vectorial® system provided versatility in addressing several important aspects:

• Adaptation to urban space, integrating precisely into each selected location quickly and easily.

• Creation of a safe, dedicated waiting area for public transport users on the platform, freeing up space on the sidewalk.

• Customization of the surface color of the main modules  and curbs to match the aesthetics of Pittsburgh’s other bus stops.

This project shows how the Vectorial® system can be easily integrated into urban projects, and its customization options allow it to be integrated and adapted to the visual aesthetics of the surrounding environment, maintaining the coherence of the city’s urban landscape.
