An infrastructure that connects Lugo safely and sustainably.

LOCATION:Lugo, ES.
PROJECT NAME:Lugo urban cycle route.
DATE:2021.

In 2021, the Lugo City Council made a strong commitment to cycling mobility by promoting the development of an urban cycle route of approximately 14 kilometers, crossing eight neighborhoods across the city.

This new cycle lane connected Lugo from east to west and from north to south, improving urban connectivity and encouraging cycling as an everyday mode of transport.

Project needs and objectives

The Lugo City Council faced the challenge of integrating this new cycling infrastructure while ensuring safe and accessible coexistence between the different modes of transport operating within the city.

In this context, the project sought to address the following needs:

  • To provide a clear, visible, and safe separation between the cycle lane and motor vehicle traffic along sections where the route ran on the roadway.
  • To solve conflicts between bus users and bike lane users at locations where both shared the same space.
  • To create bus stops that complied with universal accessibility standards while ensuring safe and accessible boarding and alighting for bus passengers.

Proposed solution

Firstly, to ensure the safety of cyclists and PMV users along sections running on the roadway, the Lugo City Council chose to install Zebra Family® cycle lane separators, which clearly define the bike lane and provide safe physical separation from motorized traffic.

Secondly, to improve coexistence between bike lane users and bus users at locations where both coincided, the City Council installed Vectorial® bus platforms in two different configurations, depending on the available space.

Where space was limited, the bus platform with integrated cycle lane configuration was used. This solution allows bike lane users to safely cross the passenger boarding area when there are no buses at the stop, although bus users will have priority.

In locations where more space was available, the City Council opted for the bus platform with access bridge and integrated cycle path configuration. This configuration allows users of the cycle lane to ride behind bus stops. This reduces conflicts between them and buses, and, at the same time, creates a safe waiting area for bus users.

Through this combination of measures, the Lugo City Council successfully integrated the new cycling infrastructure, effectively resolving the conflict between cycle lanes, bus stops, and motorized traffic. At the same time, it created a safer urban cycle route connecting eight neighborhoods across the city.
