Fortaleza, Brazil, incorporates Zebra Family® cycle lane separators into its “ciclofaixas” as part of the Bloomberg Initiative.

LOCATION:Fortaleza, BR.
PROJECT NAME:Segregated bike lane implementation in Fortaleza.
DATE:2025.

The Prefeitura of Fortaleza has implemented a cycling infrastructure project within the framework of the international Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI) program, which aims to accelerate the implementation of transformative and cyclist-friendly urban designs.

Fortaleza was the first city to receive funding under this global initiative, which includes cities around the world such as Bogotá (Colombia) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).

Like all projects supported by the initiative, this one is being developed with the help of technical experts from the Global Designing Cities Initiative for the design of cycling installations and data collection, as well as with the involvement of citizens.

Project Objectives

The Prefeitura of Fortaleza, through the Municipal Transit and Citizenship Authority (AMC), promoted the installation of a segregated bike lane on the section between Eduardo Girão and Domingos Olímpio avenues, with the aim of:

•    Protecting cyclists from motorized traffic.

•    Encouraging the use of bicycles as a means of daily transportation.

•    Increasing road safety in areas of heavy traffic.

Proposed solutions and implementation

The AMC decided to install Zebra Family® cycle lane separators on the “ciclofaixas” to meet the project’s requirements for aesthetics, dimensions, durability, safety, and ease of installation.

The solution implemented consisted of installing Zebra 13 cycle lane separators in the direction of traffic. This created a clear and safe separation between the different traffic flows and protected the bike lane on the road.

According to the Prefeitura de Fortaleza, Zebra Family® separators were chosen due to their successful performance in numerous and diverse cities around the world. In addition, the Prefeitura highlights the nature of the product as one of the main advantages, as the separators are made from recycled and recyclable materials, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

The inclusion of our solutions in a project selected under the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI) represents a very significant milestone for us. Furthermore, the support of AMC encourages us and promotes the introduction of our solutions in a country as important as Brazil, demonstrating that the Zebra Family® cycle lane separators, like the rest of our urban mobility solutions, can be successfully integrated into a wide variety of contexts.
