The City of Miami Beach, in collaboration with theMBNA (Mid-Beach Neighborhood Association), carried out the “Indian Creek Drive Flooding Mitigation Project” along the Indian Creek Drive urban corridor, a key initiative to reduce recurring flooding in the area. The project included the construction of a new seawall between 26th Street and 41st Street.
Project Needs and Objectives
As part of this project, the City of Miami Beach also aimed to promote active mobility by creating a safe and attractive environment for all citizens along the new seawall. To achieve this, the project required:
- Protecting cyclists and micromobility users (PMVs) from motorized traffic.
- Reducing vehicle speeds.
Proposed Solution
To enhance the safety of cyclists and PMV (Personal Micromobility Vehicles) users from motorized traffic, the City of Miami Beach decided to construct a protected bike lane on the roadway. To protect this bike lane, modular traffic lane dividers from the Zipper® system, configured in the B2AB layout, were installed.

In addition, to improve road safety along the corridor, the city reduced the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph. This measure, in addition to calming traffic, improves drivers’ reaction times, reduces braking distance, and expands their field of vision. As a result, it helps to prevent accidents and, above all, reduces their severity, which supports the goals of the Vision Zero initiative.
This intervention has significantly improved safety and coexistence among the different users of the Indian Creek Drive urban corridor, which was essential to promote active mobility and provide citizens a safer and more attractive urban environment.
