As part of the renovation program for the terminals at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), launched in 2022, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ)<\/a> established a temporary bus service and a waiting area for For-Hire Vehicles (FHVs). From this area, passengers were transported by bus to designated pick-up points for services such as Uber, Lyft, and other operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure that this temporary service provided safe access and met universal accessibility standards without the need for civil work, PANYNJ chose to create a dedicated bus stop equipped with a Vectorial\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> system platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project needs and objectives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The objective of the project was to establish a bus service and a bus stop connecting the FHV waiting area with the airport terminals, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and accessible experience during the terminal renovation works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main project requirements included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Ensuring accessible boarding and alighting at the bus stop for all users, including people with reduced mobility or disabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Meeting the universal accessibility standards applicable to this type of infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Implementing an agile solution that would avoid the need for civil work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Proposed solution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    PANYNJ decided to install a platform from the Vectorial\u00ae<\/sup> system with island configuration. The platform measures approximately 240 \u00d7 10 feet (73,2 meters in length by 3,05 meters in width) providing ample space for passengers to wait, board, and alight from buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To ensure compliance with accessibility standards and improve user safety, the platform incorporated main modules with a warning surface along its entire perimeter. This alerts users to the edge of the platform and helps people who are blind or visually impaired navigate the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thanks to its modular, lightweight, and reversible design, the Vectorial\u00ae<\/sup> system enabled a fast and straightforward installation, providing a temporary solution without the need for civil works and ensuring the continuity of the bus service throughout the airport’s terminal renovation works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
