The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is piloting a Transit & Truck Priority design on 14th<\/sup> Street (Manhattan). From 6AM-10PM, seven days a week, only buses and trucks will be permitted on 14th<\/sup> Street between 3rd<\/sup> and 9th<\/sup> Avenues. All other vehicles are only allowed to make local trips and are obliged to turn at the next available right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need and project objectives.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pilot project aims to improve service for the M14A\/D Select Bus Service, which began on July 1, 2019. This bus line is major transit artery connecting the Lower East Side to Union Square and the Meatpacking District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently the local service along this route is one of the most heavily used in the city, carrying 27,000 riders daily. This pilot project takes an innovative design approach to increase speeds and reliability. This route is one of the 16 Select Bus Service routes that have been implemented throughout New York City, which incorporate various elements of bus rapid transit (BRT) to serve the different types of bus routes and streets. One of the key aspects of a BRT service is the ability to quickly pick up and drop off passengers, improving transit times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NYC DOT has installed Vectorial\u00ae system on this project as a way to enable SBS buses to drop-off and pick up passengers more quickly and reduce crowding on sidewalks. This guarantees that the SBS routes can offer a BRT-level quality service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
