The recovery of the place that currently take up the cars, key for the future of the cities.

The place that car occupies in the cities has an effect on our living space. People that live in big cities such as New York, New Delhi, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Madrid, etc. know that the living space is at the same time a precious and scarce good. That is why it needs to be organized on an inclusive way, taking into account the pedestrians, the public and private transportation, green areas, parking areas, etc.

Some data about the place that cars take up.

  • In order to park a car, you will need 12 m2 (1,90m x 6,30m) and a minimum space of 3 meter in one of the sides in order to get into the vehicle.
  • The room that a parked car takes equals the room that would take 4 parked motor bikes or 6 parked bicycles.
  • 16 parked cars need the same space that 10 kids will need to play in the street.
  • A double parked car in a road with two lanes, decreases the road capacity on a 37%.

Nowadays, the vast majority of the road space is addressed to the private vehicle, even though the users of this kind of vehicles demand more space as a solution for the daily congestion that cities face, which most of the times is caused by an excess of cars. So, it is clear that the answer is not that one.

This has made most of the new urbanistic trends to be focused on making cities liveable, sustainable, comfortable as well as on the recovery of green areas.

Humanist urbanism.

Jan Gehl guru of the humanist urbanism states, “the citizens adopt the behaviour that the city offers. If we create wide roads, the traffic intensity will increase. Emblematic buildings attract foreign tourism. Open public spaces encourage interaction between neighbours. Cities that create walkable streets and bike lanes use to have a healthier population”. “If we create cities where it is more attractive to use the bike, people will ride. If the public transportation works good, people will use it. The objective is to make this alternative mode of transportation more attractive than driving a car.
