“Testing for sustainable development”: Cerema publishes two express guides to support communities in their experiments in tactical urban planning.

The lockdown linked to the Covid-19 crisis led to a significant drop in people’s trips around the city. To seize the opportunity to experiment with another vision of urban planning and make more space available for active modes of transport, Cerema (French Center for studies and expertise on risks, environment, mobility and development) decided to support communities and mobility stakeholders on cycling and walking thematic. The idea was to facilitate the use of cycling and walking as alternatives to public transport and private car.
A first webinar, organized in full lockdown and attended by more than 500 people, allowed to present different experiments, and cycling solutions tested throughout France.

Temporary cycling facilities: testing for sustainable development.

To support this dynamic, Cerema then decided to publish an express bicycle guide, entitled “Temporary cycling facilities: testing for sustainable development”. Gathering technical recommendations for the implementation of simple provisional cycling solutions, the objective of this guide is to guarantee cyclists efficient and secure journeys (regarding other vehicles but also in compliance with the measures of social distancing).

Provisional arrangements for pedestrians: testing for sustainable development.

A second express guide, entitled “Provisional arrangements for pedestrians: testing for sustainable development”, was then published. Still aimed at local authorities, its objective is to provide planning tools for public spaces, in order to give back space to pedestrians and to secure their circulation and waiting areas. Among the solutions proposed are the widening of sidewalks, the accessibility of walkways, the addition of waiting areas, etc.

The Vectorial® system.

ZICLA systeme Vectorial "Testing for sustainable development": Cerema publishes two express guides to support communities in their experiments in tactical urban planning. 1ZICLA’s Vectorial® system bus platform was presented in these two Cerema guides. Thanks to its quick installation and its modularity, it can indeed either allow the safe passage of a provisional bicycle arrangement that coincides with a bus stop or constitutes an extension of the sidewalk which creates a safe waiting area for  pedestrians. It therefore meets the twofold objective of promoting the development of temporary cycle lanes, while helping to allow secure pedestrian traffic and widening sidewalks.
