New bicycle infraestructure in Barcelona: closer and better connected.

4 Feb, 2018 | NEWS | 0 comments

Barcelona has 172 kilometers of cycling infrastructure built or in progress that will operate at 100% by the end of the year. The city of Barcelona aims to deploy a complete bicycle infrastructure, connected and in good condition, so that it is useful for all citizens and coexists with the rest of modes of transport, including journeys on foot.

Today, 152km of cycle paths or pedaled routes can be found in the city, 20km under construction, and 61 km as project.

The new bicycle infrastructure.

The criterion of construction consists of creating pedals in the form of a network, from sea to mountain and from Llobregat to Besòs, with the intention of creating safe routes to reach any place on two wheels. This network will be made up of all kinds of roads: bidirectional, unidirectional, pacified zones, zones at 30, etc., but always giving priority to the bicycle.

As noted the Mobility Councilor, Mercedes Vidal “we want a complete and connected bicycle infrastructure that is useful, provides service to the entire city and guarantees safety for all means of transport“.

When building a bike lane, previous work is needed, the space is analysed step by step and each section is adapted to the needs of the neighbors, and their contributions are also taken into account.

Among all the latest performances, one of the most notable is the splitting of the axis of Paris and London streets, where the previous bidirectional lane has been transformed into two unidirectional lanes: one in the Besòs direction and the other in the Llobregat direction respectively. Both are protected with Zebra separators from Zicla.

New space for bike lanes.

All the bike lanes built by now, take place in the road and are segregated from road traffic, to ensure safe and comfortable journeys, as well as synchronicity with other modes of transport.

Placing the bike on the road will also prevent pedestrians from invading the bike lane, at the same time that the cyclists invade the sidewalk, a space that must be completely returned to the pedestrian to avoid feeling threatened.

To all these modifications, we must add the following novelties in the form of improvement: the advanced areas for bicycles at traffic lights, known as bike corners; the crossing between lanes designed as protection zone and exclusive access to bicycles, and the bicycle lanes, or unidirectional bicycle lanes in the opposite direction to the circulation in areas of 30kph.
